Lets use a local home builder for example. In a city of 50 000 people there can be upwards of 50 to 100 home builders. Statistics have proven that over 90% of searches never get past the first 10 results on the front page. So even if your website ranks 11 or 12 or even 20 out of even 50 home builders you are not going to get much search engine traffic or new customers.

And if you are on page 3 to 5 of the search results you might as well be an invisible home builder as the chance of someone seeing your site are almost nill.

Getting your local business site from the Google wasteland to the prime real estate on the first page is not difficult. Its just a matter of giving Google and the other search engines what they want. And one of the important factors that the SE’s look for is backlinks from authority sites.

Backlinks tell the SE’s how relevant your site is, and that your website will provide the information searchers seek when they do a search. Google and the SE’s do this to rank the billion upon billion websites including your competitors.

There are basicaly two ways to optimize your site, on page optimization and off page optimization. Let me explain the two in more detail.

On Page Optimization-  starts with making sure your existing website is designed and written to rank as high as possible for the buying keywords and money phrases used by searchers looking to find a home builder, used in our earlier example.

This means creating a list of keywords and phrases that most home building clients might use when looking for a home builder.  For most areas of specialty, this is a relatively simple and easy task.

You just need to list the town or towns where you build homes, along with the keywords that best describe your expertise in home building.

Off-Page Optimization- Backlinks basically summarize off page optimization. Relevant and quality backlinks to your website, using your selected keywords in the “anchor text”. The more of these quality links you have, the higher your site will rank in the search engine results.

Great! so lets just start adding links, and my website will rush to the top of the search engine results. Not so fast, the key here is quality backlinks. There is a right and a wrong way to build backlinks.

You have probably seen offers online  promising thousands of backlinks for $24.99? We all have, they are everywhere on the internet. Chances are very good that these links will be connected with a link farm.  Google and the other search engines have been known to ban sites linked to link farms. Not temporarily suspend or drop, but Ban. To put it more bluntly forever banned from Google and the search engine search results.

What the search engines like to see is quality relevant backlinks using your websites keywords and phrases as “anchor text”, built up slowly over time. So instead of 10 000 backlinks overnight which looks unnatural. You build 10 links one week, 23 the week after that, and 8 more links the week after that, and so on and so on.
